According to the Times of India, Tata Group is planning to set up a 4GW solar cell manufacturing plant in Tamil Nadu, India.

The group’s solar energy department is said to be in the final stages of negotiations with the state government to build the facility, and the company will invest approximately 30 billion Indian rupees ($403 million).

Tata Power Solar did not respond to PV Tech's request for comment.

According to reports, earlier this year, Tata Power Solar increased the production capacity of solar modules and batteries at its Bangalore plant to 1.1GW. The device's single crystal passivated post-emitter cell (PERC) battery manufacturing capacity is now 530MW, and the module assembly capacity (using half-cut single crystal PERC cells) is 580MW.

The southeastern state of Tamil Nadu is already home to Vikram Solar's solar manufacturing business. The company recently opened a 1.3GW module production plant, which includes a production line capable of accommodating modules with M12 (210 mm) cells and double-sided panels.

After the company signed an agreement with the state government last year, the facility represents the first phase of Vikram's expansion in Tamil Nadu.

First Solar also plans to establish a solar manufacturing plant in Tamil Nadu and announced in July that it will start operating a 3.3GWdc module assembly plant in the second half of 2023.

The Minister of New Energy of India revealed that the Indian government will provide additional support for companies establishing solar manufacturing operations through its production-related incentives (PLI) program, which will increase funding by more than five times to 244 billion Indian rupees. Earlier this month, renewable energy company RK Singh.

According to consulting firm JMK Research & Analytics, although Tata Power Solar was one of the 18 bidders who submitted applications to the PLI program, it was revealed that Jindal India Solar Energy, Shirdi Sai Electricals and Reliance New Energy Solar were selected as the third.
